(OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, 7/14/16) — Beginning Friday, July 15, the Oklahoma chapter of Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK) will host its 7th annual three-day Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium (MYLS) at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla.

The three-day leadership program for Muslim high school and college students will focus on challenging Islamophobia in both social and political arenas. It will consist of a leadership banquet and a full day of workshops on promoting social justice, and will conclude with a mock legislative debate.

In its 8th year of operation, MYLS aims to empower Oklahoma Muslim youth to challenge Islamophobia and to reclaim the image of Islam through positive social activism.

“Our Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium provides attendees with the tools and resources necessary to challenge growing Islamophobia, hate rhetoric and bigotry in our society,” said CAIR-OK Events Coordinator Anna Facci. “This year, we are focused on bring Muslim youth together to discuss how they can define themselves in an ever-changing world. They will be participating in workshops designed to educate students about forms of inequality, generate meaningful conversations about their individual identities, and emphasize the role of civic engagement in community leadership.”

The 50 MYLS participants have been selected through an application process from across the state of Oklahoma to participate in this year’s program.
